Personal Life

Whitney met singer and notorious bad boy Bobby Brown in 1989 at the Soul Train Music Awards. She would later say that she became addicted to Brown and their relationship. After three years of dating, they married July 18, 1992 in a lavish ceremony on Whitney’s $10 million estate in Newark, New Jersey. Patti Labelle, Clive Davis, Gladys Knight and Donald Trump were all in attendance.

The couple’s only child, Bobbi Kristina Houston Brown, was born eight months after the wedding on March 4, 1993. Whitney wanted to have more children, specifically a little boy, but was unable to do so. Houston often cites Bobbi Kristina as her hope, saying in one of the last interviews she gave, “My daughter is my greatest inspiration.” The two had a well-known incredibly close mother-daughter relationship. Bobbi Kristina has gone on record that she wants to follow in her mother’s footsteps and sing.
